which led to the accumulation of a great body of information about the chemical and physical characteristics of both elements and compounds.

The systematised literature of chemistry as well as the laboratory arts by which chemistry is transmitted as a living science from one generation of chemists to another are based on the classification of chemical knowledge,

which soon became necessary due to the rapid expansion of chemical knowledge.

Since relationships could be determined between compounds more easily than between elements,

it happened that the classification of elements lagged behind that of compounds by a significant amount of time.

In fact, it took nearly 50 years for chemists to come to a consensus on the classification of elements after the systems for classifying compounds had become widely accepted.

J.A.R. Newlands proposed classifying the elements in 1864, assigning ordinal numbers to each starting at unity and dividing them into seven groups with characteristics closely akin to the first seven known elements at the time:

hydrogen, lithium, beryllium, boron, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. By way of comparison with the seven musical scale intervals, this relationship was given the name “rule of octaves.”

The periodic law, which states that “the elements arranged according to the magnitude of atomic weights show a periodic change of properties,

” was then proposed by Mendeleyev in 1869 as a result of extensive correlation between the properties and the atomic weights of the elements,

with special attention to valency (that is, the number of single bonds the element can form).

After Mendeleyev’s study was published, Lothar Meyer independently came to a comparable conclusion.
